PJ: Battle of the Labyrinth - I think we’re lost, dude

The journey continues…

Book 4 of the Percy Jackson series starts off great. Our heroes must fight against the growing armies of Kronos as they plan an invasion of Camp Half Blood.

At the same time, there are rumors of a spy within the camp. Annabeth leads this quest, taking Percy, Grover, and Tyson down into the newly-discovered labyrinth entrance via the back-end of the camp. They must find the maze’s creator, Daedalus.

BotL is fast-paced for the most part, and our heroes never stay in one place for long. They find themselves moving through the maze quickly, though a lot of that travel looks and feels the same (and the Labyrinth itself only makes their journey harder).

This book has a few neat twists (ones I won’t spoil here, so go read it) and some interesting implications for demigods as a whole, though I do wish it spent more time exploring the incomprehensible maze that is the labyrinth. I know, this isn’t House of Leaves, but it’d still be cool to see something along those lines.

Other than that, I’d say BotL is sitting up there behind books 1 & 3. I’m excited to finally (re)finish this series with my Mom, and with that we go to the final installment: The Last Olympian. I’ll be seeing you all in New York City!
